The panel someone sees from the street is only half of what makes a vinyl fence stand up. This is also the easiest way to tell a real vinyl fence from a cheap one before it ever goes up. A reinforced panel has weight and resistance when you press on it. A hollow one does not, and it will not hold that difference once it is in the ground either.

Vinyl comes in a wide variety of styles, heights and colours, and the choice between a solid privacy panel, a picket style, or something in between is really a choice about what the street sees versus what the yard behind it gets to keep.

What low maintenance actually means
Vinyl does not need staining, sealing or repainting, which is the whole appeal against wood. It still needs an occasional wash to keep dirt and mildew off the surface, and a reinforced panel still relies on posts set correctly in the ground to stay straight.

- Picket and semi private. Keeps some sightline through the fence while still marking the boundary.
- Lattice top. A decorative band above a privacy or picket run, the showcase style in a range of colours.
- Heights and colours. Chosen against how much of the yard needs to stay hidden, and how much you still want to see.
